We team up with AfriKids

We're consciously aware of our ethical status when sourcing raw materials which is why we're always looking for new & alternative ways to source sustainable, renewable or ethically source...

We team up with AfriKids

AfriKids is a Child Rights organisation working to improve life for Ghana’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children. The charities main focus points are;

  • To listen to what the community knows it needs
  • Empower them to make the necessary changes themselves
  • Ensure absolute sustainability

Their work ranges from the more traditional children’s projects including foster homes, schools and street child centres to more groundbreaking initiatives which tackle complex cultural issues including child labour and the spirit child phenomenon.

Rather than spreading work across a continent or focusing on a single ‘headline’ issue, AfriKids has invested time and resources in making real and fundamental change to the society and economy of one region. By doing this AfriKids has uncovered the extraordinary passion and ability of the local people there and is achieving something unique; genuine sustainability.

AfriKids takes a holistic and integrated approach to charitable development. They believe that in order to make real and lasting change to the child rights environment of northern Ghana, they need to work with all levels of society, across a range of sectors and issues.

“Our work ranges from large-scale, large-impact work in education, rights and advocacy to frontline services addressing complex issues like child streetism, child labour and the Spirit Child Phenomenon.”

We’ve teamed up with AfriKids to supply us with locally sourced Shea Butter from one of their co-operatives in Ghana, Africa.

Here at Stephenson Personal Care we use Shea Butter in a range of our products due to it’s moisturising benefits. Shea butter is full of nutrients, including vitamin A, which has many healing properties and has been known to aid in treating blemishes, wrinkles, eczema and dermatitis, as well as burns and even stretch marks. Shea butter is also packed with antioxidants like vitamin E , as well as polyphenols and phytonutrients. These ingredients make shea butter an anti-inflammatory, which is why it works so well at moisturizing and soothing all types of skin

AfriKids is about local people working to change their own communities for the better.

The Ghana staff work at a grassroots level allowing the projects to be very nuanced and bespoke to the individual communities’ needs. This style of working ensures beneficiaries get the most appropriate support but challenges AfriKids as an organisation to structure itself in a way that allows diversity to flourish. To achieve this we have developed simple analogous structures for AfriKids UK and AfriKids Ghana with clear synergies and processes.

AfriKids main objectives are:

  • To fundraise in an ethical and transparent way to meet the needs of AfriKids Ghana’s project delivery work
  • To raise the capital needed for investment in sustainability businesses
  • To source and create partnerships that help AfriKids Ghana meet its delivery and sustainability objectives
  • To offer and source technical expertise to AfriKids Ghana to support its programme delivery and sustainability activities
  • To promote AfriKids best practice in fundraising and programme delivery within the wider development and charity communities in order to:
    • Broaden the impact of AfriKids’ methodologies
    • Demonstrate the scalability of our approach
    • Enhance the credibility, profile and fundraising potential of AfriKids

The vast majority of AfriKids Ghana’s work takes place in the Upper East Region, with some partners’ work having been supported in the Northern, Upper West and Ashanti regions. The Upper East Region is an extremely poor part of the world with development indicators lagging far behind those of southern Ghana. One in nine children die before their fifth birthday in the region and 70% live in poverty, in contrast to 11% in the capital Accra.

We look forward to working with AfriKids through out the rest of 2015 and 2016, you can learn more about AfriKids here.
