So…if you don’t know Tough Mudder, lets give you a brief intro…Tough Mudder events are hardcore obstacle courses designed to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie. With the most innovative courses, over one million inspiring participants worldwide to date, and more than $5 million raised for the Wounded Warrior Project, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world….so with all that in mind we thought this would be an ideal opportunity to test Team Soap!
Tough Mudder. Done.
A bright and early start greeted most of us as we met at the Stephenson HQ to jump on our bus over to Cheshire, the team was excited, anxious, but we all felt ready to start the challenge. Equipped with a box of Bananas and Fruit Granola bars Jamie and John were ready for anything….
After a tricky traffic filled 3 hour journey we finally arrived at Tough Mudder North West, registration at the Event was well organised with plenty of volunteers on hand to assit in making sure you were ready for the pain. It was time to get ready, so together we assembled and changed into our ‘Keep Calm Make Soap’ T-Shirts, this helped us not only to have a giggle but also to spot each other in the chaos that was about to unfold.
To get through mud, fire, ice-water, and 10,000 volts of electricity you’ll need teammates to pick you up when your spirits dip. To get over 12 foot walls and through underground mud tunnels, you’ll need teammates to give you a boost and a push. Tough Mudders are team players who make sure no one gets left behind. To that end, all Mudders are expected to uphold our ideals and exhibit teamwork and camaraderie both on the course and off it.
There are pleanty of Facts you can find, but here’s the most important one. FACT – You cannot complete a Tough Mudder course alone. At first we thought this may not be the case, however, we can confirm this Fact is 100% true. Which made the Challenge even more enjoyable.
So what are the actual challenges you may ask, here are just some of the obstacles to illustrate what we tackled…
Arctic Enema – This obstacle is all about mental grit. Many athletes use ice baths for recovery, but you’ll have a difficult time relaxing your muscles in this frigid dumpster. First you must bravely jump into Big Mudder’s floating iceberg abyss. Once submerged, find the mental and physical strength to swim through the ice, under a wooden plank and pull yourself out on the other end before you become hypothermic, this is almost unbearable.
Cage Crawl - This obstacle will take your fear of confined spaces and water and combine them. Flip over on your back and pull yourself across 60 feet of cage with only 6 inches of breathing room. Floating along on your back may seem like a tranquil experience, but the sense of entrapment really does begin to play on your mind.
Island Hopping – You must leap frog from pad to pad if you want to make across and staying in one spot for too long will make it nearly impossible to get moving again. This obstacle will test your speed and agility more than anywhere else on the Tough Mudder course. Our Production Manager Rob Carr simply smashed this to pieces…
Test your fear of heights and cold all in one with the 15 foot high jump into freezing water. Don’t spend too much time pondering your leap – Marines at the top of the platform will chew you out, or worse, push you into the freezing depths below.
